About the Trust

MHAT was established five years ago by Dr Manoj Kumar (previously consultant psychiatrist in Leeds, UK). It has pioneered a model of comprehensive and effective community psychiatric care to the poorest of the mentally ill. It now runs 34 clinics in 3 rural districts in Northern Kerala in India. It has provided long-term psychiatric treatment, psycho-social interventions and rehabilitation to over 2000 severely mentally ill patients. A small team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers work tirelessly with trained volunteers from all walks of life to make the delivery of continuing care possible. We at MHAT-UK believe that this model, developed and instituted successfully by MHAT in Kerala, India, can be replicated worldwide, especially, in places facing resource-scarcity. MHAT-UK aims to support MHAT to continue to carry on their good work.
